Stewart Mountain

Region: Southern Adirondacks
November 5, 2022 | Chestertown, NY

Getting there: From the south - head north on I-87 and take exit 25. Turn left onto NY-8 towards Chestertown. After ~ 3.5 miles, turn left onto CR-56. In a mile, the trailhead will appear on your right-hand side (there is a sign.)

For reference, it’s about a 30-minute drive from the Village of Lake George. You will pass a Stewart’s if you need a quick stop before or a milkshake or coffee (or pizza, or anything else….) afterwards.

Parking: no fee, side of the road pull-off (trail starts on same side as parking area.) You will have intermittent to no cell service (as always, don’t rely on it!) Although it’s a “quicker hike” be sure to register in the trail log! This helps officials if there is an emergency or if they are looking for someone particular that day who signed in. It also helps count accurate foot traffic which can help with resource allocation in the years to follow.

The hike: Out-and-back 0.8 miles (1.28km.) Elevation gain ~187ft. (56.9m.)

A great little hike with a view point at the end - nothing technical to take note of.

To discover more hikes nearby in this area, check out the Chester Challenge here (just take note of closures during key hunting season dates in the autumn season.)

I haven’t explored the town, but nearby, there are restaurants, another gas station and a Walgreens if you need to make a stop. I’ve visited Kipp Mountain nearby, which is a 3-minute drive down the road from Stewart.

Happy Hiking and exploring!
